Philosophy for Children (P4C)

We are proud to announce that Chestnut Nursery has been awarded the Gold Level of Philosophy for Children (P4C) from Sapere in recognition of the nursery’s commitment and progress. 



At Chestnut Nursery we teach P4C as a way of developing children’s Communication and Language skills. At a foundation level in nursery P4C sessions are carefully planning to use a variety of starting points to improve children’s thinking and language to enable them to successfully communicate their ideas. At Chestnut Nursery we aim to create a climate where independent thinking is the norm and children are encouraged to explore their world, both physically and mentally, through a range of opportunities.

Philosophy Bear

As part of our Philosophy for Children work each Key Worker has a Philosophy Bear book bag which gets sent home with different children to share at home with their families. Philosophy Bear suggests a simple question which can be used to stimulate conversation and promote opinions. This helps the children to develop their language skills, feel that their ideas are valued and encourages them to formulate simple reasons to justify their answers. We also post a P4C question on our notice board which can be used as a prompt for families.
